My thoughts are with you and yours today, Anne.

What a fine piece of writing. How authentic this voice is, how modest:Saying grand things in a clear genuine voice -- as natural as life and death themselves and the celebration of both of these.

Anne Hasenstab

I love this Anne! There are always many rich layers to dig through on such seemingly simple holidays.

Grace, I will write forever - or as long as I can hold a pen - if you will read it. Thank you.

Anne H., Hello! Thanks so much for stopping by to read the piece. (I just changed the photo out this morning, probably AFTER you read, thanks to my son and daughter-in-law who sent me the photo they took of those horses yesterday.) I hope your Memorial Day weekend was a good one and that you are writing and Hemingway-ing your way through the world happily. xo

Rachael, thank you, and I hope you are well this fine day too, wherever you are in the world. xo

Emily

Thanks for writing such a moving story, Anne.

Emily, thanks so much for reading this essay and for posting a note here. I hope all is going well with you and you are enjoying a summer off from your studies.

Anne,

Love this post although I cried when I read it. When Howie came back from Kuwait members of the USCG Airstation Sitka and the boat station met him at the Sitka airport. I also had a traditional Tlingit song performed for him, which myself and two of my friends sang and drummed. Howie said that one of the best welcomes, though, was in Bangor Maine where their plane first touched down. A whole group of veterans from the VFW met his unit and shook their hands. He said it was real special. It was a simple ceremony, but it meant a lot.
